Why We React The Way We Do
Most reactions feel immediate.
Someone says something.
Something happens.
And before you have time to think, you feel.
Anger.
Hurt.
Defensiveness.
Shame.
Fear.
It happens so fast that it feels automatic.
And afterwards, you might say:
Why did I react like that?
It wasn’t even a big deal.
But to your body, it was.
Reactions rarely start in the present moment.
They start somewhere older.
A tone of voice that reminds you of something.
A look that feels familiar.
A silence that feels like rejection.
Your body remembers before your mind understands.
You promise yourself you won’t overreact next time.
You tell yourself to stay calm.
But when it happens again,
the reaction comes just as quickly.
It’s frustrating.
You think you should have more control.
You think you should be “better” by now.
But reactions are not character flaws.
They are protection.
At some point in your life,
your mind and body learned what felt unsafe.
And they became very good at responding quickly.
Sometimes too quickly.
Reflection:
You don’t need to analyse everything.
Just notice.
What situations tend to trigger you the most?
Is it criticism?
Silence?
Feeling ignored?
Feeling misunderstood?
What emotion usually comes first?
Anger?
Hurt?
Embarrassment?
If your reaction was trying to protect you,
what might it be protecting?
What does your body feel like in those moments?
Tight chest?
Fast heartbeat?
Tension in your shoulders?
For a long time, reactions feel like proof.
Proof that you are too sensitive.
Too dramatic.
Too much.
But what if they are not proof of weakness?
What if they are signals?
Signals from parts of you that once had to stay alert.
When you stop asking
What is wrong with me?
and start asking
What is this protecting?
the reaction begins to soften.
Understanding doesn’t make you weak.
It makes you aware.
And awareness creates space.
A small pause between what happens
and how you respond.
That pause changes everything.
Worth thinking about:
Reactions are often protection in disguise.
Your body remembers what your mind has forgotten.
There is a reason your system reacts the way it does.
You are not too sensitive. You are responding to something that once mattered.

– It’s about making space for them.
