The moment you start noticing yourself
Most people don’t decide to start an inner journey.
It usually begins much more quietly than that.
It starts with small moments of discomfort.
You react stronger than the situation really calls for.
You feel hurt, angry or anxious and afterwards wonder why.
You say something and later think, “Why did I say that?”
Nothing dramatic has happened.
But something inside you doesn’t feel simple anymore.
You begin to notice patterns.
The same feelings appear again and again.
The same thoughts.
The same reactions.
And slowly, a new question shows up:
Why am I like this?
Not as criticism.
Not as judgement.
Just curiosity.
It’s a small shift, but an important one.
Because this is the moment you stop only living your life…
and start noticing the person living it.
And that is where the journey begins.
examples:
You snap at someone you love.
Not because they deserved it, but because something inside you was already tired.
Later, the thoughts arrive.
Why am I like this?
What’s wrong with me?
Why can’t I just be normal?
For a long time, this is where the story usually ends —
with judgement.
But one day, something changes.
The same situation happens again.
The same reaction.
The same uncomfortable feeling afterwards.
And instead of asking what’s wrong with me,
a slightly different question appears:
What happened inside me?
It’s almost the same question.
But it feels completely different.
One is judgement.
The other is curiosity.
And curiosity is the first sign of kindness.
You replay conversations in your head at night.
Things you said. Things you didn’t say.
Tiny moments that no one else probably remembers.
But you do.
And the voice in your head is not gentle.
It points out every mistake.
Every awkward pause.
Every sentence you wish you could take back.
For years, you think this voice is helping you.
Keeping you sharp.
Keeping you from making the same mistakes again.
But slowly, you begin to wonder:
Would I ever speak to someone I love this way?
You notice how tired you feel after being around people.
Even people you like.
You tell yourself you’re too sensitive.
Too quiet.
Too much.
Or not enough.
You try to adjust.
Be easier.
Be calmer.
Be less emotional.
Be more social.
Be something else.
And one day, a new thought appears:
What if I’m not the problem?
What if I’m just exhausted from trying to be someone else?
Reflections:
You don’t have to answer these questions right now.
You don’t have to answer them at all.
They are simply here to notice what appears inside you.
When was the last time you reacted stronger than you expected?
What usually happens inside you after a mistake?
What does your inner voice sound like on a bad day?
Is it patient?
Critical?
Demanding?
Tired?
When do you feel most like you have to “adjust” yourself?
Who do you feel safest being completely yourself with?
And when you ask yourself why am I like this —
does it feel like judgement… or curiosity?
worth thinking about:
The moment you start noticing yourself, something gentle begins.
Your inner voice learned its tone somewhere.
Understanding comes before change.
Meeting yourself is the beginning of being on your own side.
