The Mountain

Don’t mistake struggle for failure.

Meaning

The Mountain appears when the struggle is making you question whether you are succeeding at all.

You may be putting in time, effort, and energy without seeing the progress you hoped for.

When the climb is long, it is easy to look at how far you still have to go and forget how much ground you have already covered.

Difficulty is not proof that your effort is wasted.

Some things take more from you before they begin to show what all that work has built.

The Mountain reminds you not to measure success only by what you can see from where you are standing.

Reflection

If you have drawn The Mountain, ask yourself whether struggle has started to feel like failure.

Are you discouraged because your effort has not yet produced the results you expected?

Have you been looking mostly at what is still missing instead of what you have already accomplished?

Think about where you started.

What exists now that did not exist then?

You may still have a long climb ahead of you, but that does not erase the distance you have already covered.

Don’t mistake struggle for failure.

Don’t mistake struggle for failure. — Wor(l)d of Gloria by #GATM

[Verse 1]
The Mountain is when
I’ve worked so hard
for so long….

But nothing looks
like it’s moved along.

I thought by now
I’d see some change.
Instead the top
still looks the same.

[Verse 2]
I’m still climbing,
still not there.
I look ahead —
I’m getting nowhere.
So much left,
so far to go.
Am I a failure?
I don’t know.

[Chorus]
I see the distance
still to climb,
and wonder if
I’ve wasted time.
Then I look back
at where I’ve been —
I came much farther
than it seemed.

Oh…
I’ve come a long way.

[Bridge]
I’m not there yet,
there’s more to go.
But I’m much farther
than I know.

[Final Chorus]
I see the distance
still to climb,
and wonder if
I’ve wasted time.
Then I look back
at where I’ve been —
I came much farther
than it seemed.

Oh yeah ..
I’ve come a long way.

Archive – earlier versions

[Verse 1]
I didn’t plan
the steeper road.
I only knew
I couldn’t stay.
The valley felt
too small to hold
the part of me
that wanted change.

[Verse 2]
The air grew thin.
The ground turned rough.
Some things I carried
fell away.
But every step
that felt too much
became the step
that led the way..

[Chorus]
You don’t climb
to touch the sky.
You climb
to see how far you’ll try.
Every stone
that slowed your way
became the step
you take today.

Oh oh
step by step
Oh oh
not there yet

[Verse 3]
No one sees
the road you make.
They only see
where you arrive.
But what I found
along the climb
was strength
I didn’t know was mine.

[Bridge – spoken]
The mountain wasn’t
standing in my way.
It showed me
how far I could rise.

[Final Chorus]
You don’t climb
to win the fight.
You climb
to follow your own light
Not to prove
what others say —
but to see
who you became.

[Verse 1]
I didn’t ask
for the harder way,
but the ground went quiet
when I tried to stay.
It wasn’t anger,
wasn’t pride —
just something in me
turning wide.

[Verse 2]
The air got thin,
the path got steep.
I left some hopes
I thought I’d keep.
But the weight I carried
wasn’t wrong —
it’s how I learned
what makes me strong.

[Chorus – updated]
You don’t climb
to reach the sky.
You climb
to see yourself walk by.
Every stone
you thought would break —
became the step
you had to take.

[Instrumental – slow, spacious, grounded]

[Verse 3 – new version]
No one knows
the path you bear.
They only see
that you got there.
But what I found
wasn’t far or wide —
just breath and fire
still alive inside.

[Bridge – spoken, low]
I wasn’t weak —
just not yet forged.
The climb
became
my only choice.

[Final Chorus]
You don’t climb
to prove your name.
You climb
because you’re not the same.
Not broken,
not erased —
just becoming
what can face the mountain
.. face the mountain…. and win
